This is my reflections for the fourth lesson. Jiawei gave us a topic for us to research on is that, what is WE, Singaporeans average electricity consumption which we will be researching on. I feel that saving electricity is being eco-friedly and that they are many kinds of way to save electricity that is very simple that we are able to do without any effort. I think being eco-friendly is very important as we can save the environment.

This is my reflections for lesson 3. It was a long day and we did much more than the first two lessons as we were more prepared and know what we should do. I felt that it is very fun as we did discussions, rather than the normal lessons which i feel is boring. We decided on our group name, our individuals role through a group discussion. I feel that the roles suited us as we choose Zhiming as leader because he is very hardworking and is very suitable for being the leader in our group. We choose Kang Ngee as the questioner as he is very picky and can get questions out of a very good answer. We compare our typing speed and i,Bryan got the recorder as i type faster than jiawei and we choose jiawei as the encourager as he encourage us in our school work in school also.
This is my post for the third lesson.

Hi again, its me! Today, I am going to answer to the question :"Still in what ways when there is a hot/cold weather, people will use more electricity?"
People use lesser electricity in the winter than the summer period. In the summer, people tend to on the air-conditioner much more than winter. In fact, in winter, people barely even on the air-conditioner. Other than air conditioner, people also on the heater more often. Heater has a huge electricity consumption which builds up the electrical bill.
I also found out that if we use fan instead of air conditioner through out the night, we can save up to 4 times the money.

To conserve more energy, we should:
Try not to on air conditioner at all time, only on it when it is unbearable.
Always turn the lightings in the fridge as low as possible.
On light at places where u are only. Do not on the lights in the whole house.
Off the television when not in use. Try not to leave the television/computer on standby mode.

Alright, thats some of my suggestion, goodbye!

I just think i should say more about global warming and its effect since it indirectly related to our topic - energy conservation.

This is how global warming could lead to a ice age.
The earth gets warmer then green house gases traps heat in the earth atmosphere. When the sun shines at the equator, where its the hottest, an ocean current brings warm water from the equator and brings north into the north hemisphere to warm up the place a little. When the warm water get too cold it flows down to the equator to 'refill' its heat and this cycle goes on the keep the earth warm. The flowing of water depends on the salt content in water and the temperature of water. It is the same concept for the south at the antarctic.
When global warming takes place, heat melts the ice caps and more fresh water(low in salt or no salt) flows into the north. When that happens the current flow is disrupted and cold water at the north is stuck at the north, so it gets colder. At the same time, water gets too warm and water expands to create floods at low land areas. Warm water also increase the chance of natural disaster like hurricanes.
When global warming takes place, heat is trap in the atmosphere and the energy trapped is used to increase the intensity of storm and hurricanes. When the ice caps melts, more area in the north will get floods.
When the north and south gets colder and colder, snow and ice will form and as snow and ice are white, they will reflect sunlight from the sun and their heat. So the coldness in the air will just keep going down and it will soon be an ice age.

Finish! So that this is an idea on what might happen.

Moving on to my reflections, the reflection is found at the grace website, lesson 3 worksheet, i guess, scroll down until you find reflections.
If you cannot find, you may follow the order.

Some questions that are still in my head:
Still in what ways when there is a hot/cold weather, people will use more electricity?
About how much percent the increase of electricity consumption during the cold period(nov, dec, jan) or the hot periods(jun, july)?

3 things i learned:
If you on a normal air condition for 1 night (8 hours), it will cost S$1.20+.
When you use a fan for 8 hours, it will cost less than 30 cents.
We need to work as a team in order to do things better.

Things that i agree with:
We need to stay back after school or at recess to do more findings and research for the project.
IPW is counted in the marks system! Work hard

----------------------

Some ideas that you people can put in your post:
Ways to conserve energy
Add on to the list on how people will use more energy on a hot/cold day
etc

One last thing
*****Find a day to stay back or at recess to complete the project proposal, its in the lesson 3 worksheet, we need to complete by next IPW lesson, on next Thursdays.*****

GOOD LUCK PEOPLES.

this is my reflection for 1st and 2nd lesson. It is very fun. I had a feel of the Grace! i will do more research and findings of the the topic we had chosen.
1st lesson our teacher did not come and we chosen the topic is 5. Weather and electricity consumption.

when the weather is hot we stay at home more often and we will use more electricity as we watch tv, use the computer, etc

As lesson one the teacher had not been able to come for class as she was in the orientation camp for secondary one students, the relieve teacher took us to the home economic room. We browse through the topics and eliminated out 58 out of 60 choices by a group discussion.
Lesson 2,the teacher came back from the orientation and brought us to the imac lab.We decided on the topic "water and electricity consumption" and the related topic is "energy conservation" as it was the teacher recommendation and we finally decided it after a group meeting.I feel that there should be two lessons for GRACE as time is very packed and after moving to and fro for classroom and imac lab, there is not much time left.I feel that the powerpoint slides should be clearer for every lessons so that we will be able to understand the topic further. The teacher also made us stay back after school to relieve for our lesson missed which i feel that is very good.

Alright,
reflections on the IPW lessons.
Week 1, the teacher did not come as she went for the orientation camp.
Week 2, teacher came and we started looking for topics to choose from.
So, we chose number 5. Weather and electricity consumption.

Here are some of my ideas and findings,
Original: Usually in hot weather, the use of air-conditioning units increases.
In a hot weather,
- Use more fan
- People tends to stay at home to avoid hot weather, which lead to television/computer, etc
- Others i can't think of..

I also found out that global warming might actually lead to global cooling,
which means that if global warming continues, the Earth might start the second ice age.

This is a short quote or summary of why it is so..

"
If you look at a globe, you'll see that the latitude of much of Europe and Scandinavia is the same as that of Alaska and permafrost-locked parts of northern Canada and central Siberia. Yet Europe has a climate more similar to that of the United States than northern Canada or Siberia. Why?

It turns out that our warmth is the result of ocean currents that bring warm surface water up from the equator into northern regions that would otherwise be so cold that even in summer they'd be covered with ice. The current of greatest concern is often referred to as "The Great Conveyor Belt," which includes what we call the Gulf Stream.

The Great Conveyor Belt, while shaped by the Coriolis effect of the Earth's rotation, is mostly driven by the greater force created by differences in water temperatures and salinity. The North Atlantic Ocean is saltier and colder than the Pacific, the result of it being so much smaller and locked into place by the Northern and Southern American Hemispheres on the west and Europe and Africa on the east.
"....

So... its actually saying that warmer water will flow to the north and will cool the warm water into ice. Something to do with the salt contents and moon or sun, i guess. Warmer sea will lead to more hurricanes, twisters.. etc
Many evidence supports this, like first time in 30 years seen snow in Las Vegas..

So i if the Earth is getting warmer(cooler), more electricity consumption human will use.

So,
In the cold weather, (in other countries)
- More gas used for fire to keep warm (lets say its snowing)
- People tends to stay at home to avoid the chilling weather, etc etc
- If heavy snow, the sky should be dark, which means lights on in the day
- And many more.. etc

In conclusion,
Global warming(warm weather) leads to cold weather(or maybe ice age).
And
Warming weather and cold weather leads to a increase in electricity.

People, add on to the hot and cold list in your posts or give more ideas!

That's all, folks!

Signing off,

Tay Zhi Ming (32)

My reflection on the 1st and 2nd lesson.
On the first lesson, our teacher in charge did not come because of orientation camp , so we did not do much work.

On the 2nd lesson, our teacher told us to go through power points slides to know better about GRACE project. She also recommends us different types of questions so that we can consider doing it. To make up for the first lesson , we suggest that we should stay back after school to discuss more about this project.

The topic our group chose was number 5 - electricity consumption.
